OUTDOOR KITCHENS

It Might be Time for That Outdoor Kitchen

Now that we’ve all been spending more time at home than we ever imagined, it might be time to consider building that perfect backyard space.

Outdoor kitchens are growing in popularity in the Hudson Valley, as they not only increase home values, but make cooking and cleanup easier, bring families together in the fresh air, and ultimately enhance the enjoyment of your home.

More than just a built-in grill and some storage, these unique spaces have to be thoughtfully planned out for their best usage, and rugged enough to withstand the elements.

In helping homeowners plan and design their outdoor kitchens, I start with a discussion about the needs of the space, such as how many people it needs to fit and the amenities that matter most in your new “room,” like sinks with running water, the size of the grill, a refrigerator for those cold beverages, even an ice maker (which has to be drained and brought indoors come winter, along with the fridge). We’ll design for proper storage, function and flow—making sure that permanent grill is properly ventilated and your trips in and out of the house will be limited. We’ll also think about proper lighting—and shade—for any time of day.
Whether patio, porch or poolside, your selection of materials for your outdoor kitchen is crucial, given our area’s weather. Countertops should be stone—preferably sealed granite, which is beautiful, easy to clean and non-absorbent. Only consider the highest-quality cabinetry that is specifically constructed for use outside and made from teak, stainless steel or other durable material. For example, Crystal’s outdoor cabinets are moisture- and insect-resistant and made from recycled polyethylene. The hinges and drawer guides are stainless steel, and the finishes range from wood-grains to solids. Options include pullout wastebaskets, rollout shelves for those BBQ tools and supplies, and other organizational features. The “smallest details” can end up having a big impact on your overall enjoyment of the space.
Give us a call to discuss your ideas for extending your home’s living space. Indoor or outdoor, we’re your kitchen dream team!
